Sand Flies: Anti-mosquito sprays will kill larva

THERE are several types of sand flies, the most common ones being the phtebomus. They live in swarms and they deposit their eggs mostly in damp places, crevices and decaying vegetation. The adults live mostly outdoors, but sometimes they invade houses. Sand flies are not only nuisances, their bites cause severe pain. Sand flies are also vectors of several diseases including cutaneous leishmaniasis (Aleoppo boil), visceral leishmaniasis (kala azar), mucosal leishmania and sand fly fever.

Control measure:
To control Sand flies, it is recommended to spray walls with residual insecticides like Baygon WP, Folithion WP or Solfac WP, whose effect lasts for several months. Sprays applied for the control of mosquitoes in anti-malaria campaigns have an additional bonus in the drastic reduction of Sand flies. Sand fly infestation can be reduced also by spraying mosquito screens on windows with baygon.

For control of Sand flies outdoor like in camping places or small towns and villages, fog applications are recommended using thermal or non-thermal aerosol formulations. For rodents invasions outside, you dust the gardens with baygon DP, but remember to restrain your pets from the dusted areas.
