BURUNDI and Rwanda made a flying start in the CAF/CECAFA under-17 youth football tournament that started in Bujumbura, Burundi at the weekend.
Burundi, boosted by several players from the country’s top league, trounced Serengeti Boys of Tanzania 3-1 while Rwanda beat Somalia 2-0 in an earlier match.
Playing with the memory of losing to Uganda under-20 in the Cecafa junior Challenge Cup at the same venue last year, Burundi were in no mood to lose again with Amrani Ndikumana — who plays for Inter Stars — putting the home team into the lead after ten minutes.
Tanzania levelled the score on the stroke of half time through Hamadi before Pierre Kwizera and Emmanuel Ngama scored for Burundi to seal the game.
Jean Marie Rukundo and Herman Ngoma scored in the first and 26th minutes respectively as Rwanda hit Somalia 2-0 in the opening match of the tournament.
Group A action continues today with Tanzania hosting Rwanda at 2.00pm and Burundi playing Somalia at 4.00pm.
Uganda will open their campaign tomorrow when they take on Kenya.
