POLICE are investigating fake cheques being presented to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, James Bakama reports from Jinja.

Football body boss Lawrence Mulindwa revealed that he has received questionable cheques amounting to sh80m from suppliers who insist they were issued by past FUFA executives. The claims go as far back as 1995.

“All these cheques are presented with no supporting documents, and when we insist on submission of such paper work these people never return,” explained Mulindwa adding that they have involved the Criminal Investigations Department.

“This is one of the investigative mechanisms we have put in place to safeguard FUFA property.” Mulindwa told FUFA delegates at the federation’s general assembly.

“It’s also intriguing how one can keep a cheque for all those years,” wondered Mulindwa. Cheques normally get stale after six months.

FUFA is also reluctant to pay a garage demanding millions for repairs done on federation cars.

FUFA vice president (finance) Jowali Kyeyago said that former executives were called to verify the claims but they didn’t respond.

But Patrick Isiagi, a treasurer between 2001-2002, said he has not been contacted. He advised FUFA to use past executives’ final accounts as a basis for payment. “Final accounts list creditors. Anyone outside these shouldn’t be paid.”
