THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) in collaboration with the Police have discovered a home in Bunamwaya, a Kampala suburb, where counterfeit goods are parked and distributed to different outlets in Kampala, writes Samuel Balagadde.

The operation also included officials from Reckitt Benckiser – East Africa, the makers of Jik, Harpic and Dettol soap. Emmanuel Makumbi, Reckitt Benckiser’s country representative, said their sales had been severely affected by the counterfeits.

“We have been monitoring these people for the last six months. We have managed to get their particulars and the ingredients used to fake our products, ” Makumbi said.

Moses Sebunnya, the bureau’s spokesman, said several suspects who were arrested during the operation would appear before court.

“The public should be vigilant about any unclear operation they come across. Counterfeits are a national concern because some are poisonous to human life,” said Sebunnya.

Several empty containers of Jik, Royco Mchuzi Mix and Vim were recovered and taken to Katwe Police Station.
