HITS Telecom has signed a $100m contract with Alcatel-Lucent for a GSM technology-based network. The move will enable HITS introduce its services before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala in November.

“HITS Telecom and Alcatel-Lucent share a common view regarding the role they can play in enhancing the communications services available to the people of Africa.

“Customers of HITS Telecom will be assured of access to the best network, best value for money, innovative services and widespread retail distribution channels, all backed by world-class customer service,” the company said in a statement.

The statement explained that HITS Telecom, which benefits from access to a broad radio spectrum, will extend its coverage to new markets, including semi-urban and rural areas, while focusing on corporate social responsibility.
