THE discovery of oil in western Uganda will help the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party consolidate its hold onto power, the defence state minister has said.

Ruth Nankabirwa said the oil would help eradicate poverty and deny the opposition one of the propaganda tools they were using to criticise the government.

Nankabirwa, who was last Friday addressing a governance workshop in Kayunga district, said the oil industry would create jobs for the jobless and boost the economy.

On the peace talks, the minister said the Government had formed a committee of top lawyers to formulate a law under which Joseph Kony and the top LRA commanders would be tried at home.
She said consultations were ongoing across the country to get the views of the public on how to reconcile the parties that were involved in the conflict and general accountability.

Nankabirwa commended RESS Community Initiative, the workshop organisers, for empowering leaders and helping solve problems of constituents.
RESS is a brainchild of women MPs, Sarah Nyombi (Ntenjeru), Sylvia Namabidde (Mityana), Ruth Kavuma (Kalangala) and ex-MP Erone Nantume.
