THE Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has given concessions to people around Queen Elizabeth National Park to fish in the park. The agreement, signed with residents of Kicwamba and Ryeru sub-counties in Bushenyi district, allows them to fish in Nyamusingiri and Kyasanduka water bodies, both located in the park.

Tom Okello, the park warden, signed on behalf of UWA and David Kisembo, a local councillor, represented the district and residents.

Okello appealed to the fishermen to avoid infringing on other wildlife resources.

Kisembo said the concession would help increase incomes of the fishermen.

Prior to the pact, people living around the park had clashed with authorities over poaching and other illegal activities.

UWA resolved to give communities 20% of the revenue from the park areas and making other concessions as a way of involving them in conserving the parks .
