THE House broke off for Christmas recess this week. Parliament Speaker Edward Ssekandi on Tuesday adjourned the House plenary sessions to January. During the recess, MPs are expected to consult their electorate on various issues to be considered next year.

House breaks for Recess
THE House broke off for Christmas recess this week. Parliament Speaker Edward Ssekandi on Tuesday adjourned the House plenary sessions to January. During the recess, MPs are expected to consult their electorate on various issues to be considered next year. Among them is the Land Amendment Bill 2007 that has raised a hullabaloo in Buganda and the Domestic Relations Bill.

FDC’s Abdu Katuntu was on Tuesday sworn in as the MP for Bugweri County in Iganga district. Katuntu beat NRM’s Alhaj Kirunda Kivejinja the hotly contested race where cases of violence were cited.Parliament Speaker, Edward Ssekandi, presided over the swearing-in ceremony. He advised Katuntu to work for the good of his people, including those who opposed him. FDC MPs flashing a V sign escorted Katuntu to the podium for swearing.

KUTESA UNVEILS cHOGM EXPENDITURE

The foreign affairs minister, Sam Kutesa, on Tuesday released accountability for the money spent on CHOGM to the Parliament select committee on CHOGM. According to Kutesa, sh255b was disbursed to various sub-committees to prepare for the summit. The money is spread over a period of three financial years. He, however, told the committee chaired by Onyango Kakoba, that more accountability would be availed after completion of the projects.

According to the figures presented to the committee, the Ministry of Works and Transport received sh72b.
Energy PS summoned over rent arrears
The parliamentary committee on commissions and statutory authorities on Tuesday summoned the Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary, Kaliisa Kabagambe, over failure to remit sh2.86b to the company managing Amber House. MPs heard that the ministry had not paid rent to Amber House Limited amounting to sh2.86b.

The company’s board chairman, Stephen Bamwanga, explained that Amber House Ltd is registered and appointed by government to manage the property of Amber House.

NRM analyses Kivejinja defeat

NRM MPs on Monday resolved to investigate complaints that appointments to key positions in government bodies and parastatals were dominated by people from western Uganda. This came up as the caucus discussed factors that led to the defeat of the Third Deputy Prime Minister, Kirunda Kivejinja in Bugweri. Mike Mukula the party vice–chairperson for eastern region, cited the appointments as one of the issues affecting the party. Mukula cited CAA, NDA, NWSC, UBC and NFA among others as headed by westerners.

NWSC fails to pay sh153b loan

The national economy committee this week learnt that the National Water and Sewerage Corporation has failed to pay a loan amounting to sh153.4b. In the 1990s the Government borrowed sh89.8b from the International Development Agency of the World Bank and gave it to NWSC.

Students petition over corruption

Students have asked Parliament to pass anti-corruption laws to strengthen the fight against the vice. They met the Speaker, Edward Ssekandi.
