THE excitement, the shopping frenzy, the Christmas bonanzas, discounts at the supermarkets … Christmas fever is as high as the thermometers can go. Are you going to celebrate your Christmas at home? You are spot on. There is no place to celebrate Christmas like home. This year round, make it a fun filled Christmas for everyone at home.

First things first: “Christmas is a time for prayer and meditation. It goes beyond the fun,” Baguma, an administrator at Makerere University, reminds us. We are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, remember? Now, do not start throwing birthday parties before inviting the birthday boy. Take the whole family to church including the maid and women. We will see how to handle the gap left in the kitchen later on.

Family reunions bring the magic of Christmas home like no other tradition. Invite all the cousins and uncles who do not have to travel long distances to your home with their families for the Christmas day. Of course, you can spread the costs by asking each family to contribute both labour and money. It is about the reunion, not saddling one family with costs.

For a change, steer clear of the heavy Christmas dinner that takes ages to prepare and leaves all the women and children too drained to enjoy it. “I would be glad not to do any housework, this Christmas,” says one pregnant lady. How about a barbeque? No lengthy recipes, everyone has fun taking part, no dishes for the kids to wash afterwards and it is still a feast. Just have lots of meat, salads and drinks. If you still want a traditional dinner, think about hiring catering services.

Make the gift-giving more fun than usual through a treasure hunt as Cathy Matovu, a desktop publisher, would suggest. Hide everyone’s gift around the home. He who finds their gift takes it and if one comes across another person’s gift, they do not even whisper anything about it. Just the perfect way for adults and children together to play.

Talking about play, how about a football match in the course of the day? Use a tennis ball if you have a small compound. Both adults and children should play together. It is about unwinding and having fun, not competing so, take it easy. No one should get hurt. You can also relax with board games like monopoly and scrabble.

Let the children be children. For sh150,000, you can hire the most glorious of bouncing castles from event managers in town. The kids will have a field day and will be clear of the barbeque fire.

Whatever you choose to do, just make sure the whole family has a very merry Christmas.
