I prayed for a man

WHEN Grace Nakalema sang Mukama Nsaba Ontondere Omuntu (God create someone especially for me), she got Moses Wasswa and changed her name to Hanifa. The beautiful artiste is also the general manager of Hot Line Concept, a company that organises events. She talked to Maureen Nakatudde about her life.

Why did you have to appeal to God for a man? Weren’t there many around?
It is because of disappointment. The guy I had trusted so much let me down and I had to pray fervently for a man who could be mine alone.

What happened?
He pretended to be humble and saved but was a professional hypocrite. I used to find messages from girls on his phone. One said: ‘I’m three months’ pregnant.’ This meant that they were having live sex! I used to find my things missing or relocated; my panties had gotten lost... That troubled me a lot.
What did he say?
He denied it all the time. Then he said I was nagging him and asked me a killer question: ‘Couldn’t I live without him? Was I not alive when I was still single?’ I left him and nursed my broken heart.

How did you cope with the broken heart?
I had fun with my girl friends. I used to swim a lot. My job also kept me busy. When I finally recovered, I actually realised that I was tired of him.

Do you meet?
When I became famous, he came back! (Laughter) He apologised and pleaded that we resume our relationship but I could not. I actually composed another song Nafuna Omuntu (I got a partner). In the song, I asked him why he was calling me when he had asked me if I couldn’t live without him

You also sang Kwata woyagala leero (touch wherever you want). were you telling Moses?
(Laughing) No. It was for all lovers.

So, what song have you sang for him?
Sweetina, Onyumira. It is about the man I call my husband and how much I love him.

How did marriage to a Muslim change your lifestyle?
I am now called Hanifa not Grace. My recent album has Hanifa Nakalema. He calls me Hani short for Hanifa. I have to learn his religion for the sake of my children.

But Muslims are allowed four wives!
We discussed it. I do not want him to get any other woman apart from me. However, if he goes ahead and gets, he should not let me know about it.

Any plans of walking down the aisle?
(Laughing)Yes of course. It will be next year.
