FORMER national champion Ronald Ssebuguzi finally had reason to smile when he posted the fastest time to win the Champion’s Sprint at Entebbe Botanical Gardens on Boxing Day.

It is Ssebuguzi’s only win this season.

Ssebuguzi in a Mitsubishi Evo4 clocked 9.23 minutes, beating second placed Susan Muwonge (Subaru) by 46 seconds.

Ssebuguzi overcame a spirited challenge from his old rival Omar Mayanja who won one of the two runs.

But Mayanja suffered an aborted run due to a mechanical problem, effectively ruling him out of contention.

“There was a bit of pressure from Muhangi and Mayanja,” Ssebuguzi remarked.

“It’s nice winning at last but victory in a sprint is not big enough to excite me.”

Godfrey Kiyega was third, one second behind Muwonge while Charles Muhangi who made a surprise appearance in a Subaru ‘Ekitaguriiro’ Impreza came fourth, a full minute off the pace.

It was Muhangi’s first outing this season.

His Subaru, popular with fans, again roared like it did when the driver won the 1999 Africa Rally Championship title.

Ahmed Sempebwa (Subaru) and Two-wheel-drive champion Edson Mungereza (Toyota Levin) were fifth and sixth respectively.

Ben Koyesiga and 18- Shaffiq Ssemuju,18, were seventh and eighth respectively in the event organised by Southern Motor Club.

Meanwhile, Arthur Blick won the Open class of the motocycle event.
