OVER 22,000 former rebels have been pardoned by the Uganda Amnesty Commission. As a result, the commission has presented a proposal to the World Bank, sourcing funds to reintegrate former combatants.

The spokesperson of the commission, Moses Draku, disclosed this while presenting a paper on the progress of the implementation of the Amnesty Act during a seminar for local leaders from Gulu and Amuru districts recently.

“We shall bring together the community and ex-combatants such that they learn skills that will help them generate incomes,” he said.

He said the reintegration project would enable ex-combatants become independent.

He added that the former rebels would also benefit from the Windle Trust Acholi Bursary Scheme and the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund.

According to Draku, blanket amnesty would remain in place till June 2008 for whoever denounces rebellion.

The commissioner in charge of the northern region, Grace Ocitti, said former rebels, especially youths, should be encouraged to study. “We should lobby the Government to come up with a complimentary opportunity of primary education for the LRA ex-combatants,” she said.
