THE New Year in Kampala was welcomed in grand style in the city centre. As many urban dwellers were watching fireworks at Sheraton Kampala Hotel and other places like Didi’s World and Fairway Hotel, several teenagers who had gathered at DV8 bar and restaurant on Wilson Road to watch their favourite artistes perform went wild shortly before midnight.

They then joined Bobi Wine and walked around the city centre screaming with bare chests.

Outside DV8 were many teenagers smoking and sipping Waragi from buvera. However, a fight broke out and nearly ruined the celebrations, only to cease when the fireworks split the sky.

Although many joints in the city registered enough attendances, the most congested places were Speke Road and Wandegeya’s Kacwampale. The excited crowds at those places lit hand-held fireworks as they screamed their lungs out.

Unlike other nights, the traffic in the city centre became inevitable. It took one hour for sanity to return to Kampala after the much hyped fireworks.
