THE Special Revenue Protection Service (SRPS) has impounded watches that were smuggled into the city by a businessman, Hajji Saad Mugema Ibrahim.

If verified, the watches would have fetched sh3.9m in taxes and sh3.1m in fines, totalling to sh7m.

The watches were impounded on December 28 in Namanve, following an endless pursuit from Lugazi.

“We intercepted him in in Namanve after he evaded our roadblock in Lugazi,” Bahoku Barigye SRPS’ spokesman told reporters at Uganda Revenue Authority’s (URA) stores in Nakawa, Kampala.
Barigye said the 11 packets of smuggled watches were brought from Busia in a Nissan Terrano registration number UAG 205A.

He said the watches would be handled in accordance with the law.

“The watches will follow the usual procedure of auctioning. What will follow will depend on the discretion of the Commissioner General,” Barigye said.
He said the goods and vehicle can also be forfeited or the owner can pay for the goods and the fine.

Barigye said smuggling would soon be history if the community was willing to cooperate with the authorities.
