The army yesterday retired state minister for communication Col. Tom Butime and MPs Capt. David Matovu (Kooki county) and Lt. Pius Mujuzi (Kyotera).

“The officers will receive their retirement certificates as they missed a similar ceremony last year. It is a strict procedure that officers are sent off in an organised manner,” a military source said yesterday. Retirement applications for Butime and others were cleared at the same time with that of Major Bright Rwamirama (Isingiro North MP), Major Ruranga Rubaramira (an AIDS activist) and Capt. Guma Gumisiriza (Ibanda North MP).

The army’s promotions and commissions board, chaired by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Nyakairima Aronda, cleared the applications last year but no formal retirement ceremony was conducted.

Their retirement comes after Gen. Salim Saleh retired on December 28, after 25 years of service. Eight other officers also retired with Saleh.

Last year, the army retired President Gen. Yoweri Museveni, former army commander Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu and the First deputy prime minister, Lt. Gen. Moses Ali. Others were health minister Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi and lands minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire.
