THE Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), the youth wing of the Democratic Party (DP), has asked DP leaders to state the official party candidate for the Kampala mayoral race.
UYD vice-president Fred Mukasa Mbidde (right) last week said DP’s National Executive Committee should solve the issue so that UYD members can campaign for the candidate.
“UYD has not yet taken sides on the Kampala mayoral race. We are urging our leaders to give us the candidate we can support and campaign for,” Mbidde said.
Two DP members - former Kampala mayor Nasser Sebaggala, who pulled out of the presidential race and acting mayor Hasib Takuba Kabuye - were nominated to contest for the seat.
Mbidde, who is the deputy campaign coordinator for presidential candidate John Ssebaana Kizito, expressed confidence that Ssebaana would win the presidency, adding that the only challenge for DP was to reach out to all Ugandans to convince them that he was the answer to Uganda’s problems.
“We young democrats are disappointed by the way President Museveni is campaigning. He is simply abusing other candidates instead of focusing on what he intends to do if he is re-elected. Voters should not consider Museveni because he has already despised them. How can he have posters in casual clothes when he is seeking an office job?” Mbidde asked.
He added, “Our candidate heads a political party which has never killed anybody. Ssebaana is a candidate who is impartial and an economist.”
UYD members, however, said the recent increase of polling stations from 18,000 to over 25,000 should be investigated because Ugndan’s population does not warrant it.
