DEMOCRATIC Party (DP) presidential candidate John Ssebaana Kizito has pledged to probe the alleged mismanagement of funds from the sale of government parastatals.
“I will set up a probe to investigate the proceeds from parastatals like Uganda Electricity Board and Coffee Marketing Board, which were sold by the Movement government, but their proceeds were not accounted for,” Ssebaana said.
Addressing a campaign rally in Mityana town on Friday, Ssebaana said DP would not join the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), because the latter is a young party.
“DP has been in existence for 50 years, FDC is just one-and-a-half years. Of the two, which party is older? FDC should be the one to join us, besides we do not know their goals,” Ssebaana said.
Kizza Besigye is the FDC presidential candidate.
Ssebaana said the government had for 20 years neglected the agricultural sector, yet it is the backbone of Uganda.
“Coffee and bananas, no longer exist. They were affected by wilts, but the government has not provided pesticides to the poor farmers, yet they are major cash crops,” he said.
“If voted into power, I will look for market for Uganda’s agricultural produce, to empower the farmers with money,” Ssebaana said, adding, “Vote me into power. As an economist, I will restore Uganda’s economy from poverty to prosperity.”
Asked about federo, Ssebaana said, “If I become president, it will be a walkover to introduce a federal system of government, provided it is their (people’s) wish.”
He said, “the government jailed some opposition members because it fears to face a favourable competition in the presidential campaigns. I will free all politically-persecuted prisoners when I come into power.”
Ssebaana also held several rallies at Kiryookya, Mutetema, Kalangaalo, Kikonge and Kyamusisi trading centres.
