Children International, a US-based NGO, has donated textbooks worth sh23m to three schools in Busia district.
Buwembe Community Secondary School received books worth sh8m, while Buwembe Primary School and Namugodi Primary School each received textbooks worth sh7.7m.
The books, donated through the Church of Uganda, were last Monday handed over to the respective headteachers.
The ceremony took place at Buwembe Community Secondary School and was attended by the chairman board of governors, Moses Mapesa.
Mapesa, who is also the executive director, Uganda Wildlife Authority, said the books would contribute towards the improvement of education in the three schools and Samia Bugwe North constituency in general.
“I therefore call upon the community to work hard towards the development of the three schools. Rather than waiting for the Government, we should prove that through our efforts, we can produce tangible results,” Mapesa told an impromptu parent’s meeting.
He said the school that started from the nearby primary section had embarked on the construction of its own infrastructure.
“We have put up a four-classroom block and are in the process of constructing science laboratories and a library,” Mapesa said.
He said the academic performance of the school also improved after it recruited qualified teachers.
“In the last three years, we have been able to acquire laboratory equipment, a computer and duplicating machine.
He said the school also received financial assistance from the American embassy, Irish embassy and the Ministry of Local Government.
The Rev. Essau Wandera, who represented the Church, said education was an investment.
“As a church we shall put an effort towards the construction of physical structures and provision of books to the schools,” Wandera said.
