The executive director, Angela Balaba, says assistance can be given either in cash or in kind. The organisation needs wheel chairs, spinal beds and spinal mattresses.
How to join
Anybody with spinal cord injury qualifies to join provided the injury was not caused by criminal activity. SIA (Spinal Injury Association) therefore has to see the hospital records of the person to establish the cause of the injury.
There is a registration form that new members fill in. The member then pays sh5,000 in SIA’s bank account. New members must first undergo a thorough assessment to certify that they suffered spinal cord injury.
SIA establishes the next of kin so as to carry out family therapy.
