THE UPDF is to build and renovate all health units in the barracks across the country, the Chief Of Defence Forces (CDF), General Aronda Nyakairima, said on Thursday.

Addressing civilians and senior army officers at the commissioning of Nakasongola Military Hospital, Aronda said, “When I came here, this place was littered with cows, goats and bees. Some criminals had even removed the roofs but I said the hospital must be put in place. We seem to be slow but we are focused,” he said.

He said the UPDF had for long not done much about the officer’s welfare because it was concentrating on the northern war waged by rebel leader Joseph Kony.

“Now that Kony is almost no more, we shall focus more on improving the welfare and health of our officers. All health units in the barracks will be worked upon and improved,” he said.

He said the Government would equip the 220-bed hospital at the military airbase.

“This facility should be maintained at the level it is. I don’t want to come here after one week and find charcoal writings on the walls, neither should I find the toilets blocked with buveera (polythene).”
He urged the airbase division commander, Col. Denis Asiimwe, to put in place bylaws to safeguard the facility.

The chief of medical services, Dr. James Makumbi, said, “This is what we call a hospital, not the taka taka (rubbish) you hear about with walls nearly falling. These are the fundamental changes we have brought.”

He urged the CDF to expeditiously recruit personal for the hospital.
“And to the community, ensure that the drugs and other items delivered here do not find their way to town, which is not far away from here.”Makumbi said.
