FORMER Vice-President Speciosa Wandira’s estranged husband Engineer Charles Kazibwe has switched political allegiance from Kizza Besigye to Yoweri Museveni.

Kazibwe, who was hostile to Museveni and decampaigned him in the 2001 presidential polls, especially around Kasangati on Kampala-Gayaza road, prompted cheers from a mammoth crowd under a scorching sun when he walked up to Museveni on Saturday, bowed, shook his hand and pledged to campaign for him.

Museveni, in a black suit and his characteristic stetson hat, was on his campaign itinerary that started at the busy Wandegeya roundabout.

He visited the bustling but filthy market at Kalerwe, Mpererwe, Kasangati, Kajjansi, Nkumba, Entebbe, Nakawuka, Kasenge and Kyengera, where he attracted applause from many female fans who jogged along his motorcade.

The women waved his posters and shouted: “Museveni no change”, “Baby face”, “embooko yaffe” (our capable leader), “Taata Natasha obeewo” (Natasha’s dad should stay in office),“tojjaggenda” (you will not go) and other endearing slogans.

Looking emaciated, Kazibwe turned up in a yellow NRM campaign cap and a badge bearing Museveni’s portrait on the right lapel of a dark blue suit.

“I am going to look for votes for Museveni particularly around here (Kasangati) and the neighbouring areas.”

On why he campaigned against Museveni in 2001, Kazibwe looked away and said, “I am now campaigning for Museveni, that is what matters. I have been looking for him to tell him this.”
Kazibwe and his wife, now studying at Havard university in the USA, were separated by the High Court last year.

Museveni appealed to his supporters to vote for him so that his party can consolidate what Uganda has achieved and guarantee continued peace, stability and the attainment of prosperity for all.

“Our policies shall focus on the core pillars of development particularly good governance, prudent economic management, promotion of education at all levels, consolidate the gains in the health sector, promote high value agricultural produce/value addition and continue building our nation’s infrastructure,” he pledged to cheering supporters.

“Vote for us so that we can continue to strengthen our development, promote tourism, continue with the professionalisation of the army, consolidation of defence/security, continue addressing environmental issues, promotion of regional integration, Pan-Africanism, deepening of decentralisation and promotion of information and communication technology to help Uganda fit into the globalised economy.”

He lashed out at his rivals, saying the NRM was very different from them.

“The NRM has all the talents that have assisted Uganda to get to this point in time and has the programmes to propel into a future of prosperity for all.

“We are on record for being non-sectarian. Don’t hand Uganda to either failures like UPC and DP or non-starters like FDC. Give it to the veterans who have been tested by fire and time,” he said.

He said among the NRM achievements in Wakiso district were increases in the number of primary school pupils, teachers and classrooms.

He said the NRM had increased access to clean water in Nansana, Kakiri, Seguku, Bunamwaya, Zana, Nyanama, Lubowa, Kyanja, Mpererwe, Kiteezi, Gayaza, Nkumba, Abayita, Katabi, Kasenyi, Kira and other places.

“Wakiso now has 47 well-equipped health centres to cater for the health of our people in this district,” he pointed out.

“Remember that Entebbe International Airport is in Wakiso district. It was in a very sorry state when we came into power. We repaired it, raised it to international standards and that attracted more flights in and out of the airport, which has been very good for Uganda,” he said as his supporters yelled, “UPC, DP, FDC ngege ezimaze okuvunda (UPC, DP and FDC are rotten fish).
