IN yet another turning point in his long political career, Jaberi Bidandi Ssali will unveil his People’s Progressive Party (PPP) today.

The launch at Fairway hotel in Kampala will involve Bidandi, the national chairman, highlighting the fundamental long-term objectives of the party.

Since his departure from the National Resistance Movement (nrm) last year where he was the second vice-chairman, Bidandi (right) has kept the public guessing about his next move.

Friends and foes have in the past christened him “Ssekanyolya” (a long-necked bird), because of his ability to foresee situations and take strategic positions.

He boasts of more than 40 years experience in politics and many have come to see him as a principled politician.

Accustomed to speaking his mind, Bidandi has on many occasions courted controversy, but steered clear of confrontation.

Along with Eriya Kategaya, he, five years ago, began the campaign for the need to open up political space.
Bidandi started as a member of the Uganda People’s Congress in the 1960s as a vocal youth.

When Obote was overthrown in 1971, Bidandi joined the struggle to overthrow Idi Amin. Towards the 1980 elections, he joined Yoweri Museveni and others to start the Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM) and was the secretary general.

Bidandi was one of the people who supported the struggle to remove Obote, by mobilising finances and recruiting for the National Resistance Army.
