FUFA’s participation in the 2006 CAF Congress in Cairo has earned Uganda multi-national aid expected to elevate the flagging fortunes of the country’s senior and junior soccer teams.

Federation president Lawrence Mulindwa, while attending the high-profile convention in Egypt, managed to resolve Uganda’s previously devastated relationship with north Africa federations Algeria, Tunisia and Libya.

In a statement yesterday, FUFA public relations officer Aldrine Nsubuga disclosed that Algeria had promised to offer air tickets to Uganda for various friendly matches in future while Libya would revisit its exchange programme that earlier earned Uganda $50,000 (sh90m) for development projects.

“This arrangement will be on-going. Mulindwa will officially sign an agreement with the Algerian federation immediately on his return,” said Aldrine.
“The FUFA president will travel early in February to Algeria to finalise these arrangements.

“The Libyan and Tunisian delegations have also agreed similar arrangements with the Uganda FA.”

Recently the German football federation (DFB) invited Mulindwa to discuss ways of reviving their development support to Uganda.

In a related development, the South African and Zambian football associations have written to FUFA requesting to have their friendly matches against Cranes held after the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Cairo.

FUFA had last month requested to have the Cranes play friendly games with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and Zambia’ Chipolopolo early this year.

“They wrote informing us that due to the tight schedules, they would not be in a position to make it soon. That will only be after the Nations Cup,” FUFA administrative secretary Vincent Khisa disclosed yesterday.
