Colourful displays catch your eye as you walk past. Children’s clothes and travel bags are some items on display. This is Maria’s Galleria arcade, a new airy shopping area in town which opened late last year. It is best to shop during week days from mid-morning till 4.00pm because the place is not crowded. There were no pick-pockets in sight but you should be wise to avoid surprises.

Where exactly is it located?
The arcade is on Dastur Street, near radio one and on Luwum Street opposite City Centre complex.

Is it friendly for male shoppers?
On level 3, shop 13, there are sports t-shirts and trainers. Men can also find boxer shorts with a pack of three going for sh45,000.

What is in store for women shoppers?
A small shop on level 3, shop 2, Anne’s boutique stands out with attractive collection of handbags, jewellery like chunky necklaces and ladies’ shoes.
Level 3 shop 13 has a collection of attractive clothes imported from the United Kingdom. New mothers can find a collection of baby items like burp cloths and bouncing cradles. Clothes range from sh25,000 upwards, depending on what you want.

How can l get there? Is there parking?
The complex has no provision for parking. If you want to shop from there, it would be wise to park along Kampala road or Luwum Street. But on a busy day it will be a nightmare to find parking.

Is the arcade open on public holidays?
At the recently ended Idd Adhuha, most shops were open although some were closed.

How big is the complex? What services are available?
Currently, it has four floors which are operational. On the ground floor is a forex bureau where one can sell or buy foreign currency. Jehovah Jireh boutique offers the shopper women’s clothes like separates like skirts, blouses and trousers. Sarah Finn UK style, level 2, shop 16, has a beautiful collection of bracelets, necklaces and nightdresses. Night dresses go for sh35,000.

Where can l have a bite within the arcade?
There are two fast food spots, Mr. Deli’s and City Bite take-away.
At City Bite, the most expensive dish on the menu is chicken and chips, going for sh3,500.

Will l be able to hear my phone ring?
This depends on how you carry your handbag. If it is under your arms then you will hear it.

Must go areas
l Shops not to miss include; level 3 shop2. The handbags are simply captivating.
l Level 2 shop16 has sexy lingerie. A bra with a matching panty costs from sh45,000 upwards. Detail on the bras is very attractive.
l Level 3 shop 13, has a collection of good quality children’s clothes and men’s socks going for sh10,000 a pair.
