Namboole stadium will go buzzing this Sunday as over 50 local artistes scramble for cash and plaques at the Golden Awards fest popularly known Ani asinze or Ani asinga? (Who is better?) Fans will pay sh3,000 as entrance fee.

And the roots of the awards? What begun as an entertainment feast, where kadongo kamu artistes scrambled for a trophy, has now grown to accomodate the entire local music industry. The first Ani asinga festival was held at Masaka recreation ground in 1995. Paul Kafeero, Mamuli Katumba and Mulindwa muwonge (the latter was miming late Herman Basudde’s songs) compeeted for the trophy then. Paul Kafeero won.

The following year, the Ani Asinga shifted to Wobulenzi, drawing mammoth crowds to the taxi park. The festival grew into an annual event, drawing fans from all walks of life. The entry fee was often less than what would buy lunch downtown.

Ani asinga was often spiced by crazy, entertainment events. At one fest, there was a slot for the very ugliest man in the land! The ‘ogre’ won himself a newly built house. At the Ani asinga fest in 2000, the MCs showed up wearing skirts and gomesis.

Today, 10 years later, the festival will include more than 30 categories. The focus has been set on the top prizes. Who will bag the sh5m for best female artiste –– Catherine Kusaasira or Juliana Kanyomoozi? Will Chameleon prove his worth against Mesach Semakula to be voted artiste of the year? And will Ronald Mayinja’s popular
Tulikubunkeenke scoop the plaque for song of the year? Well, you decide. Fans will vote for their favourite artiste during the fest. Votes will be counted there and then and prizes given out.
