THE electoral offences squad of the police is investigating 178 cases over malpractices ranging from rigging, voter bribery, defacing of candidates’ posters to voter intimidation and harassment, reports Steven Candia.

The Police yesterday said they had received four new petitions by Monday and were investigating four parliamentary aspirants in Kiboga, Bukomansimbi, Buyaga and the Sembabule Woman MP Anifa Bangirana Kawooya over alleged electoral malpractices.

While Kawooya, Colins Kilimani and Idi Kisiki Lubyayi are being probed over allegations of forged academic papers, Barnabus Tinkasimire, an aspirant for Buyaga, allegedly did not resigning as assistant chief administrative officer of Tororo before his nomination.

Of the cases reported, the NRM takes the lead among political parties with 112 cases against its supporters, followed by FDC with 24, DP with eight, JEEMA has one and 33 against independents.

Addressing journalists yesterday, deputy CID director Okoth Ochola dismissed talk that the police was only targeting the opposition.
