Kulusum Naigaga broke into incontrollable tears when she received news that she was the best O’level student in Mbale district, writes Nathan Etengu.

“Are you dreaming or you are just teasing me?” Naigaga asked when The New Vision broke the news to her.

Naigaga, a student of Hamdan Girls’ High School, had dropped out of school in Senior Two due to lack of fees.

The headmistress, Zaitun Kituyi, said a member of the school board and deputy mayor, Hajat Jamila Naleba, appealed to the school to allow her study on a hastily arranged scholarship.

“We had a programme where we gave sponsorship to the best performing students who are also disciplined,” Kituyi said.

Naigaga said she wants to become a doctor.
