UGANDA people’s Congress (UPC) presidential candidate Miria Obote has promised to end the 20-year-long war in the north if she wins next month’s elections.

Miria’s convoy, which was led by former minister in the Obote II regime Kham Karekaho, was on Tuesday welcomed by a huge crowd of UPC supporters at Nyakibale Hospital in Rukungiri.

Miria, who arrived in the town at 5:25pm, addressed the rally in Rukungiri stadium up to 6:35pm when the Police chief, Okot Obwona, cautioned the district UPC boss, William Tindiwensi, to end it.

Miria, who had lost her voice in the past three days, addressed her supporters in Rukiga, runyankore and Luganda.

She said the war in the north would never end if president Yoweri Museveni was still in power. She promised to set up a truth and reconciliation commission to handle the war.

Miria said she wept when she saw that there were no drugs, beds and staff in hospitals built by Dr. Apollo Obote.

She identified the hospitals as Itojo, Kitagata and Kambuga.
