OLYMPIAN Jolly Katongole has punched his way back to the national team squad preparing for the Zone V championship in Arusha, Tanzania February 10-17.

The tactful light flyweight, who last fought mid 2005, surprised Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation (UABF) officials with rigorous punches that saw him beat Phillip Adyak 3-2 in the first Zone V trials at Lugogo on Sunday.

Katongole had been sidelined from the national team for indiscipline after he vanished from the Ugandan contingent at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

“I’m happy they (UABF) pardoned me. I was misled. I’m happy to be back in the national team. I only trained for one week and it is great I won,” Katongole said.

UABF secretary Sande Musoke said that it was unwise to ignore Katongole because he was the best.

“He is still the best we have in his weight. He is very fit and showed it in the trials today (Sunday). I have counselled him and hope he will follow what our advise,” Musoke said.

Other boxers who will start training today include Kennedy Akena, Muzamir Sebi (feather), Adyak (fly), Hassan Abdu, Charles Olweny (light), Sam Kabugo, Charles Komakech (light heavy) and Charles Muwanga (superheavy).
