THE changing of telephone numbers kicks off today, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) executive director, Patrick Masambu, has said.

“Subscriber numbers will be expanded from the current six to seven digits, for all mobile numbers and MTN fixed lines. On April 15, Uganda Telecom fixed lines will also change and they will be expanded from eight to nine digits,” Masambu said in a statement yesterday.

The statement said the exercise is automatic, instant and free to all customers, adding that customers should not be worried of buying new simcards.

“This is a free exercise to all. Customers will continue using their simcards,” he said.

He said both the new numbers and the old ones would run concurrently for six months, “to ensure a smooth transition.” Thereafter, the old numbers will phase out.
