A six-man committee has been named to resolve the stand-off generated by Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) elections held last year.

A former UCF chairman, Jack Mucunguzi, heads the committee that will also run the chess governing body for six months. He takes over from the disbanded executive of Gerald Katulege elected in November.

Mucunguzi’s committee will wind up with the election of a new executive to take charge of UCF for the next two years.

Committee members are national coach Joe Kaamu and senior players Andrew Bakiza, Patrick Tumwine, Vianney Luggya and Stephen Kawuma.

Godfrey Gali, secretary in the disbanded executive, said the committee was formed after a crisis meeting involving the chess fraternity last week.

“I hope the committee will find a lasting solution to the problem,” Gali said.

The committee is also charged with the task of preparing the six-man team for the Olympiad and reviewing aspects of the constitution to do with membership and elections.

Shortly after Katulege’s executive took office, five clubs petitioned the returning officer David Luswata, arguing that the elections were illegal.

Mulago, Kampala Club, Luzira, Stanbic and Aviation complained that ‘non-member’ clubs had influenced the elections.

Luswata asked the accused clubs to respond to the charge, but they failed to do so, forcing him to seek NCS intervention.

NCS responded by asking UCF to put their house in order, which led to formation of the Mucunguzi committee.
