UGANDA’S young cricketers faced a torrid day at the hands of the world champions Pakistan, who tamed their batsmen then secured victory in 13.5 overs yesterday.

Uganda’s batting in particular put them out of the game early, with Raymond Otim the only player to score double digits. Opener Roger Mukasa (0) did not last the first over with Jimmy Okello(5), Arthur Kyobe (9) and Issa Issaneez (6) all struggling against the Pakistan spinners.

Pakistan had clearly done some homework on Uganda.

“We knew about the athletic fielding of the Ugandans but we also knew their weakness with the bat and we opted to bowl first. But they are big-hearted and with more exposure they can do better,” said Pakistan coach Mansoor Rana.

Coach Sam Walusimbi blamed the low scores on a poor batting pitch, while manager Justine Ligyalingi was of the view his team lacked the “fighting spirit”, and gave a one- hour motivational lecture to the team after the game.

It cannot get worse, was his view, and that is what the Ugandans will have in mind when they take on New Zealand today.
