THE Universal Primary Education (UPE) has demystified education as a privilege of the rich, the Masaka Chief Magistrate, David Batema, has said.

THE Universal Primary Education (UPE) has demystified education as a privilege of the rich, the Masaka Chief Magistrate, David Batema, has said.
Batema said no matter what opponents of President Yoweri Museveni say about UPE, the programme has been beneficial to the rural folk.
“Uneducated villagers used to make envious comments about those who went to school, something that bred discomfort. However, that is no more since all the children are being educated free of charge,†he said.
Batema was speaking during the 13th commissioning ceremony for 2005 PLE candidates of Iganga Boys Boarding Primary School.
The headmaster, Fred Kasiisa, said the ceremony was an annual event to officially send off P.7 leavers.
During the function, pupils who excelled in last year’s Primary Leaving Examinations were awarded prizes. Samuel Ibudi, who emerged winner in the district, walked away with a mattress, books and sh100,000.
