MAISHA is a filmmakers laboratory and training programme dedicated to the support and development of screenwriters and directors in East Africa and South Asia.
It aims to preserve, cultivate and unleash local voices from these regions. Independent producer, director and founder of Maisha, Mira Nair, firmly believes that if we don’t tell our stories, no one will. Maisha held its first Screenwriters’ Lab in Kampala, in August last year.
Promising screenwriters were selected from 147 applications. The feedback received from participants was very positive. Geresom Musamali, whose comedic screenplay The Fleas of Ggwangalyange, had this to say, “I have never been to a cinema hall, so if I can be picked from zero and made a success, we will have told the whole world there is talent here that has lain idle.â€
The second Screenwriters’ Lab and first Directors’ Lab will be held in July and August at the Jinja Nile Resort in Jinja, Uganda. The Maisha Screenwriters lab is intended for beginners.
No experience in the screenwriting format is necessary. if a writer presents an imaginative, engaging story, then they are encouraged to apply. The Maisha Directors lab is for beginners and intermediate filmmakers.
Expertise in directing feature films is not required. Now the application deadline for the 2006 Maisha Screenwriters and Directors labs has been extended to Friday March 17, 2006. Applicants from previous labs are encouraged to re-apply.
