SIR — The New Vision of February 11, 2006 published an inaccurate account of what President Yoweri Museveni said at Kagadi (on February 9,) where he addressed a huge rally.

After explaining what the Government had done for Kibaale district; (UPE, health centres, clean water, starting the electricity line etc), he counselled the Banyoro and the Bafuruki to live in harmony.

He told them he had appointed Prof. Mukama’s Committee to study their issue and make recommendations to the Government. Museveni told everybody that, as they all knew, he is from the Basiita Clan – one of the oldest in the area. The Basiita were active in the area during the time of the Batembuzi (prior to 900AD), during the time of the Babiito and Bahinda (1500 to date). He pointed out that through out all this time, the communities in these areas were always multi-tribal and received immigrants whom they integrated. Museveni gave examples of the Bachwezi, who are said to have come from Ethiopia. They were absorbed to the community. Museveni gave the example of the Babiito who were Luos. They were absorbed. He, therefore, told the Banyoro not to be zeno-phobic. He also counselled the Bafuruki not to be arrogant and misbehave because they could be rejected as happened to the Bachwezi who were rejected. He did not “warn Bakiga”, but counselled both sides.
