THE commander of the Land Forces, Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala, has lashed out at opposition politicians who say they will dismantle the army if they win the coming presidential and parliamentary elections.

He said no one should just wake up and decide to dismantle the UPDF.

“If someone talks of dismantling the UPDF, which army do they want to guard this country,” Katumba warned while passing out 501 UPDF soldiers in basic military training at Gulu army barracks on Monday.

“The houses which look like planes in Kampala would not be there if the UPDF had not sacrificed their lives to guard this country,” he said.

He said the army had defeated the Lord’s Resistance Army terrorists without UN help and were now mopping up the remnants to allow the internally displaced people in the camps to go back home.

He said some politicians were claiming the army had used the 10% soldiers’ salary raise. He said the money had not even been released by the finance ministry, adding that the money would be paid this year.

He said the soldiers’ housing allowances were used to build several barracks.
