PRESIDENT Yoweri museveni has said makerere University has cleared his wife Janet over allegations that she lacks the academic qualifications to stand for MP.

Campaigning in Ruhama yesterday, Museveni said the university vice-chancellor in-charge of academic affairs, Dr. Lillian Tebatema, had written to the EC clarifying that Janet was admitted on the basis of a diploma obtained from abroad, which was accepted as an equivalent of a Grade 5 diploma in education.

“I saw Janet running up and down. I asked her what the problem was and she said, ‘They say my papers are not alright.’

“I rang Dr. Tebatema, who said she had written to the EC,” Museveni said.
Quoting the letter to EC from Makerere, Museveni, said, “Her admission was approved by the vice-chancellor on the basis of a recommendation of the dean of the faculty of education, where she was to be admitted.”

Citing instances where people forge qualifications, Museveni said it was not bad for Ruzindana to question Janet’s papers.

“Like Kapere using Museveni’s papers, but for the case, of Ruzindana it is stupid. He never said Janet changed her name or used another person’s certificate. He used Janet Kataha Museveni. She had a diploma from abroad, which she presented to get admitted. They admitted her and she passed highly.

“Let Ruzindana go and gather other things but this is over. When he saw Janet was going to defeat him, he decided to query her academic papers. Let Ruzindana and my wife compete,” he said.

He said Ruzindana was shameless because he ran away during the struggle against Amin and Obote, to sell posho.

Two residents of Ruhama, Barnabas turyamusiima and Denis Mugizi Mbangira in a February 15 letter petitioned the EC to nullify Janet’s candidature, saying she did not meet the academic requirements.
The petitioners dispute Janet’s degree and O’level certificate.

Janet is contesting for the Ruhama county parliamentary seat, where FDC’s Augustine Ruzindana is the incumbent.
