Bongo Flava brings Rocky Giant out of shadows

This saw Tanzanian artistes like Mr. Blue, Rah P and many others become household names on the Ugandan music scene.

And when many Ugandan artistes jumped onto the dancehall music bandwagon, Rocky Giant did the unexpected — he went for the rare music genre of Tanzanian origin. Bongo Flava is reminiscent of the urban hip-hop music style, but sung in Swahili. The end result? Rocky Giant has made himself a household name.

Riding on the runaway success of his two main hits Rafiki and Nikifika, Rocky Giant is merging as one of the most versatile artistes in the year 2006.
Blending Swahili and Luganda, Rocky Giant is the rhyming new-kid-on-the-block!

With slapstick lyrics in most of his songs, Rocky Giant drives the crowd wild whenever he performs. He makes an excellent rapper and performer worth every music lover’s fascination. But it is his most famous hit Rafiki that mostly throws the crowds into frenzy. It makes fans holler and applaud him in approval! Rafiki has recently been in heavy rotation on most local FM radio stations.

The video of the song is receiving ample airplay on WBS TV and UBC.
Although he has recorded over 10 songs, Rocky Giant says he has not yet thought of releasing an album.
In his songs, Rocky Giant sounds fluent in both Swahili and Luganda despite being of a different background.

Born Fred Giria, 22 years ago, Rocky Giant is a Lugbara, but has never been to Arua. He was born and raised in Jinja before he relocated to Kampala in his teens.

Rocky Giant kicked off his musical career as a member of the Jungle Beat Crew about two years ago. The Crew, which had Mosh Sendi as President also consisted of Dorothy Bukiirwa, Sweet Kid and the late Kefa Mwesigwa.
