UGANDANS were ejected from the men’s singles contest of the ITF East African money circuit yesterday, and have turned their guns on the doubles where they are expected to do well.

Herbert Buyinza, the only Ugandan who made it to the second round of the ITF East African money circuit at Lugogo, fell to seed-four Maurice Wamukowa of Kenya.

Buyinza (right) had earlier triumphed over fellow Ugandan Joseph Mujuni 6-2 6-2. Rwandan Claude Gasigwa and Pascal Kazungu defeated Ugandans John Oyet and Charles Senyange respectively.

Rwandan Slyan Rutikanga dismissed Carlo Kalungi 6-3 6-0 while Shaban Lwanga fell to Kenyan Fazal Khan 6-3 6-3.
In the earlier round, Wamukowa came from a set down to defeat Ugandan Christopher Baagala 4-6 6-3 7-5.

Ugandans Moses Otiti and Stewart Sseppuuya also fell to Rwandan Eric Hegenimana and Kenyan Francis Rogoi respectively.

Favourites Zimbabweans Genius Chidzikwe and Tongona Gwinyai got byes into the second round and advanced yesterday.
The tournament sponsored by ITF and Ultimate Security will see the winner take home $1000 (sh1.8m). The finals are tomorrow.

Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Amelie Mauresmo 7-6 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Open yesterday, robbing the Frenchwoman of the chance to take number one world ranking this week. The defeat ended a run of 16 successive victories for Mauresmo that earned her three titles this year, including the Australian Open.
