Okot Omwony to lead Ugandan team to Melbourne

Chief de Mission Peter Okot Omwony General Team Manager Justin Ligyalingi Team Doctor P. K. Ntege Ssengendo UGANDA Olympic Committee (UOC) vice president Peter Okot Omwony has been named Chief de Mission of the national team to the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.

Omwony, who is also the athletics federation technical vice president has been given the top task by the UOC and National Council of sports. He will be assisted by NCS assistant general secretary Justin Ligyalingi, who will be the general team manager.

Uganda will be represented by 53 athletes and 20 officials. The final team and all the athletes travelling are set to be released on Saturday after the UOC Council meeting at Grand Imperial Hotel. The meeting will discuss the team’s departure set for next week and funding for the games.

Uganda will be represented in nine sports disciplines; athletics, boxing, shooting, table tennis, swimming, cycling, badminton, rugby and weightlifting.

Uganda won two silver medals in boxing at the last games in Manchester in 2002. Uganda’s last gold medals were also from boxing, with Justin Juuko and Godfrey Nyakana winning titles in 1990.
