SIR – It grieves me every time I see companies alleging they are going to assist Ugandans find greener pastures in Canada. This is in particular reference to a story that appeared recently claiming that Canada is looking for people in the medical field and chefs for Indian restaurants.

As somebody who is well acquainted with the situation here, please allow me to enlighten the ignorant Ugandans before they get duped.
Contrary to popular belief, the Canadian Health Act does not allow anyone qualified from a third world country to practise in the medical field here. To make matters worse, some universities like The University of Alberta will not admit any student into the medical programme who is not a Canadian citizen.
That is the reason many of the Indian doctors who come here in the hope of practising within their profession end up driving cabs. This has been a rising problem in Canada that in fact resulted into an internal probe because most of the immigrants are very dissatisfied with the way they are treated.
They come here with their qualifications only to be handed the lowliest of jobs. As for the Indian restaurants, there is no apparent lack of chefs that would possibly result in a need for immigrants to fill up these positions. I mean, there are so many Indians as it is who can more comfortably fill up any huge vacancy that could possibly arise! So take great care, and remember that anyone can take the test that Canreach is offering by following this link: www.cic.gc.ca.

SIR – I would like to comment on the Canadian immigration firm that featured in the media recently. I advise fellow Ugandans, especially those desperate to immigrate to Canada and other countries, to be careful. I have already heard of people who have been conned by such firms.
Such businesses are meant to make quick money out of poor, desperate people in developing countries, after which they disappear without doing anything productive for their clients. Please watch out.
