GEORGE Olayo ended 10 years of waiting for a second major title with victory at the Bro Group Western golf Open on Sunday.

The Mbarara top player carded one-over par 141 to claim the opening Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke play championship event at the Toro Club course.

Olayo, back to winning ways after the Uganda Airlines Open success in 1996, was level par 70 on Sunday having brought 71 on Saturday.

“I cannot describe how happy I am,” Olayo said after the winning putt.

Olayo sunk five birdies on the first 18 and four on the second, to go top of the championship leader board.

Last year’s national champion Stephen Kasaija who switched to the professional ranks won in this category with 138 strokes.

Bro Group managing director Jeff Baitwa promised the golf fraternity of continued sponsorship.

“We will be back next year, this is our contribution to the development of the game,” Baitwa said.
The next UGU event is the Mbarara Open March 18-19.
