UGANDA’S first batch of athletes to the Commonwealth Games left yesterday. The second group will leave on Thursday, to be joined by a final one next week.

Shooters, who were supposed to have travelled with the first batch of 15 athletes and three officials, had their trip delayed after they failed to get clearance for their shooting equipment.

“There were some documentation they had to process. Being a public holiday, they could not get the documentation hence a delay in their travel plans,” explained trip coordinator Salim Musoke.

Chief De Mission Okot Omwony is already in Melbourne, having travelled last week. Uganda is expected to send a team of 49 athletes and 16 officials to the games that start on March 15.
Uganda will participate in boxing, athletics, swimming, shooting, weightlifting, cycling, badminton, rugby and table tennis.

The rugby team was on the plane yesterday, and are optimistic they will make an impact on their debut to the Commonwealth Games.
Uganda is in a tough group that has highly ranked South Africa, Samoa and Tonga.

“They might be highly ranked but they are just like any other country out there. We have gone to compete and we will surely compete,” was coach (right) Tolbert Onyango’s analysis.

Meanwhile, Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) President Maj. Gen Francis Nyangweso has clarified that the power to increase officials depended on the capacity of the various federations to foot the extra bills.

He said that apart from athletics (11 athletes), rugby (11) and badminton (4) who are able take two officials, all the remaining disciplines have one official each.
