LONDON, Thursday – The Archbishop of York expressed condolences Thursday upon learning that 26 people had died when an evangelical church collapsed outside the capital Kampala in his native Uganda.

“My condolences for all those who have lost loved ones in this disaster and my sympathies to all those who have been injured,” said archbishop John Sentamu (left), who became Britain’s first black archbishop last year.

A spokesman for Sentamu, the second most senior clergyman in the Anglican Church, said the archbishop was extremely shocked when he learned that the City of the Lord Church had collapsed during a thunderstorm.

Up to 1,000 people were inside the church for prayers on Wednesday evening. Twenty-six people died and nearly 100 were injured when the roof, then the walls came crashing down.
