THE government of Japan has given a grant of $88,405 (about sh160m) to the Uganda Youth Development Link (UYDEL), to support construction of a vocational training centre in Wakiso district.

Japanese ambassador Ryuzo Kikuchi and UYDEL chairman Nathan Twino on Friday signed the grant agreement at the Japan embassy in Kampala.

The centre, which will be located on Gayaza road, will provide skills in tailoring, hair dressing, mechanics, fishing and carpentry to youth living in slums.

Kikuchi said the prosperity of the country would be based on the knowledge and skills gained through vocational training.
“Technical education has played a crucial role in the development of our country. I encourage Uganda civil society to initiate vocational training projects,” Kikuchi said.
