THE local government ministry has approved a sh1.21b advance as an increase in Graduated Tax compensation to Mukono, Godfrey Ddamulira, the district chairman, has said.
Ddamulira said the advance was an increase from about sh600m approved for the 2005/06 financial year.
He said the ministry had considered the district’s financial woes over clearing debtors while meeting operational costs.
Ddamulira said the local government ministry’s permanent secretary, Vincent Ssekono, had approved the increase.
During a press conference recently, he said the district had the biggest debt to pay of sh798m to Excel Construction Company for the partial completion of the sh4.2b administration block.
Ddamulira said the district recently re-possessed a 50-acre piece of land, which was confiscated by Excel over the debt.
He said Excel, through Bailiff Masters Ltd, had also impounded eight vehicles but released them.
The Commercial Court had ordered Excel, through Bailiff Masters, to sell 22 vehicles by public auction to recover sh300m.
