A three-gun salute yesterday marked the burial of internal affairs state minister Dr. Kezimbira Miyingo, who died in Mulago hospital on Saturday.

Several Cabinet ministers, MPs and commanders of the armed forces attended the burial at Nkunyo in Bukoto, Masaka district.

Dr. Edward Ddumba, the director of Mulago Hospital, said Miyingo was admitted with kidney complications and high blood pressure.

There was, however, some commotion when Lt. Gen. Elly Tumwine pointed out that one of the guns used in the gun salute still had a bullet in the chamber.

The situation was calmed by the commander of the land forces, Lt. Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, who said he would handle the policeman responsible.

Wamala warned the policeman against touching the trigger until the ceremony was over. Premier Prof. Apolo Nsibambi handed over sh3m from President Yoweri Museveni to the widow.

He hailed Kezimbira for his role as chairman of the African Group negotiations during the World Summit on Sustanable development, which underscored the importance of poverty eradication in environmental protection in South Africa in 2002.

NRM vice-chairman Al Hajji Moses Kigongo cautioned religious leaders against politicising Miyingo’s death.

Kigongo handed over sh1m to the widow.

Mourners chased away Sarah Nkonge Muwonge from the vigil and threatened to harm LC5 councillor Joe Walusimbi, who represented district chairman Vincent Ssempijja who is said to have decampaigned Miyingo.

They threatened to rough up MP-elect Isaac Ssejjoba and his supporters. The Police were deployed to ensure security.
