A spade is a hand tool used to dig ground, or to break up clumps in the soil. It consists of two parts; the blade, of plate-iron, and the handle, of tough root-cut ash timber, rather longer than the handle of the pick. Spades are manufactured in different sizes and types, but usually with a flat blade.

Spades with curved edges or pointed blades are easiest to thrust into the earth in hard or stiff soils than the common square-mouthed spade and they are the best species for new-ground work.

Spades are also used for scooping soil and filling carts to transfer to another area or for throwing earth to a distance. You can buy yourself a spade from most hardware shops and supermarkets like Game Stores at between sh15,000 and sh20,000.
