PAINT beautifies a house and reflects the owner’s tastes. But paint fades and is prone to the vagaries of the weather. Certainly this affects a building. After sometime, therefore, a house must be re-painted to maintain its look. And this costs money.
“Every wall ‘breathes’ and there is a flow of air, which contains moisture,†explains Anil. C. Sankaran, the general manager, Building Centre on Kitgum House. “The accumulated moisture becomes a bubble, which bursts and the paint peels, requiring a house to be repainted,†he says.
Although it requires money, one need not worry about re-painting a house. Decorative plaster concoat-SP3, a fine textured decorative finish, gives a house lasting beauty.
It is a dry pre-mixed fine textured finishing coat with a thickness of approximately 1.5-2mm. SP3 consists of white portland cement, marble chips, hydrated lime, non-fading pigment and chemical improving agents.
“SP3 is a premixed cement plaster containing colour pigment, which basically means you don’t have to re-paint your building yet the surface can be washed,†says Sankaran.
“You simply mix SP3 with water and apply to the exterior wall. The background for application should be clean, free of dust deposits, loose mortar, chemical impurities such as salt and sulphates and other contaminations, which may adversely affect adhesion and cause variation in colour.†he explains.
John Wiggins, a construction consultant at Pat Construction in Mukono says the ingredients for pre-mixed plaster and mortars make them resistant to bad weather conditions.
SP3 has been applied on Rwenzori House, Diamond Trust Building, Gadidh Building and Udyam House in Kampala. “It costs sh10,000 per square metre. A bag that covers 20 square metres is at sh130,000,†says Sankaran.
“Our construction staff are trained to apply SP3 on buildings.â€
