ALWAYS Be Tolerant (ABETO), a local NGO, has urged the education ministry to incorporate political tolerance in its curriculum to prevent youth from involving themselves in political violence.

ABETO chairman Moses Musana said political tolerance should be taught from pre-primary school through university and other tertiary institutions.

“Youth constitute the majority of the population, an age bracket that’s so vulnerable and can be used positively or negatively. Some political parties, have for example been promising jobs to the youth after participating in violence, which is risking their lives,” he said.

Addressing students at St. Francis hall, Makerere University on Saturday, Musana said, “Youths should not be lured into unproductive activities like rebellions and hooliganism because they lead to bloodshed and destruction of infrastructure.”

The resident representative of Frederick Ebert Stiftung, Juergen Peters, ABETO’s development partner, said, “There was violence in the LC3 elections. We attribute this to lack of civic education and lack of political tolerance by the electorate.”
